Baby's sleep is an important balance (also for the parent), which will vary as the baby develops.

In his first weeks, baby needs to feel snug and secure, then after 5 to 6 months, baby will need freedom of movement. Each baby will have different needs, some will be more or less precocious in their motor skills and their needs.

Before 6 months:

- Baby will have frequent startled awakenings during this phase (the Moro reflexes which are the feeling of falling into a void, that we can sometimes also experience in adulthood). The only way to avoid these nocturnal startles is to swaddle with elbow support.

- Baby needs to be in the fetal position (strongly at birth, then less and less). This flexion that the fetal position brings, promotes digestion, promotes mobility of the head (to avoid plagiocephaly).

- Baby goes back to sleep independently in utero because he has access to his hands to suck his fingers, thanks to the walls of the uterus. At birth, baby no longer has access to his hands when lying in bed.

Baby will sleep much better:

- in the arms,

- swaddled, but lacks flexion and access to hands

 - in a birth cocoon: a soft swaddle that leaves baby in the fetal position, and gives him access to his hands. (www.mapetitelaine.fr)

After 6 months:

or sometimes before

By fidgets, turns around, explores.

It is then time to put baby in a sleeping bag to leave him free for his many nocturnal movements.

There are all kinds of sleeping bags, I always recommend wool sleeping bags. Wool thermo-regulates and allows baby to avoid getting too hot!

FYI, baby's hands are ALWAYS cold, but that doesn't mean baby is cold. An uncomfortable baby cries! And if baby is too hot, his neck will be wet!

Here are the best brands of sleeping bags for both summer and winter: which are also made out of a wool fabric , the best thermoregulatory one ou'll ever find.

-Disana:
an excellent sleeping bag in boiled wool or knitted merino wool

 - Popolini: For babies who cannot bear to be constrained by a sleeping bag, there are also "footed" sleeping bags, it is between pajamas and sleeping bags

Here is a reseller site, which offers sleeping bag rentals! They have a great selection to choose from! :
